Before Taking Prevacid (Lansoprazole)

The active ingredient in Prevacid Delayed-Release Capsules and Tablets is Lansoprazole – a white to brownish-white odorless crystalline powder which melts with decomposition at approximately 166°C.

Before taking Prevacid (Lansoprazole):

  • Let your doctor or pharmacist know if you are allergic to it or to similar drugs such as omeprazole, pantoprazole or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other health disorders.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, including liver disease.
  • Proton pump inhibitors such as Lansoprazole may increase your risk for bone fractures, especially if it is used for a longer period of time and in higher doses. Talk with your physician about any ways to prevent bone loss/fracture, for example by taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.
  • During pregnancy the use of this medication should be avoided. If it is impossible, discuss all pros and cons with your doctor.
  • It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. However, similar drugs pass into breast milk. The effects on an unborn child are unknown. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
  • Before using Prevacid (Lansoprazole), consult your doctor or pharmacist about the other medications you are taking at the moment and how to reduce or avoid these types of interactions.
  • Based on information for similar drugs, Prevacid (Lansoprazole) may increase the amount of Digoxin that is absorbed into your blood. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you also take Digoxin.
